Comedy Icon Chris Rock has laid low for the past few years, after an unfortunate event we all know which
I will not speak of!? But the award-winning comedian is back with a vengeance. Since that event, Chris
hasn’t really been in the spotlight besides a highly rated live Netflix comedy special titled “Selective
Outrage.” But what everyone would really like to know is, “Do we still hate Chris Rock?” Well, … maybe
we’ve hated one comment here and there; but like his most recent stand-up special states “it’s just
selective outrage!”
Chris Rock was born on February 7th, 1965. Not in Brooklyn, New York, but actually South Carolina. His
family moved to New York shortly after his birth. We’ll get more into his family later! Chris Rock made his name in the stand-up comedy world, beginning on the mid 1980’s. Chris was discovered by Eddie Murphy at the New York City club To Catch a Rising Star. Chris has produced multiple highly rated stand-up comedy specials over his career and is usually ranked as one of the best in the field. He’s exceled in television and film as well (both behind and in front of the camera.) Directing, writing, producing and acting are some of the duties Mr. Rock has taken on over the years. He’s done everything from winning awards to hosting award shows like the MTV Awards and the Academy Awards. Those are just a few of his career highlights.
What better way to step back into the limelight than with his classic 2000’s television series “Everybody Hates Chris” which has been in syndication for years. It premiered in 2005 and aired on UPN and then the CW for four seasons. “Everybody Hates Chris” is the story of young Chris Rock growing up with his family in the 1980’s, in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, while attending an all white school across town.
The new series “Everybody Still Hates Chris,” kicks off right where the previous series left off, only now in
animation form. Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold return as father and mother, Julius and Rochelle. His
siblings have been replaced. In real life, he’s actually one of seven. The series narrows it down to just
three. Young Chris, originally played by Tyler James Williams will be voiced by Tim Johnson Jr. Younger
siblings Tonya and Drew, will be handled by Terrence Little Gardenhigh and Ozioma Akagha. Best friend
Greg is voiced by Gunnar Sizemore. Loretta Devine, Antonio Fargas, Ernest Thomas, Todd Bridges,
Earthquake, Jacqueline Mazarella, Tisha Campbell, Jackee Harry and Kevontay Jackson reprise their
original roles throughout the series, just now as cartoon characters.
Guest stars lending their voices for the first season include rap superstar Busta Rhymes, legendary talk
show host Sally Jessy Raphael, New Edition’s splinter group Bell Biv DeVoe, sketch series Mad TV’s Phil
LaMarr, A Different World actress Cree Summer, comic Ron Funches and many more.
Everybody Still Hates Chris is a CBS Studios Eye Animation Production along with Chris Rock Enterprises. The series showrunner is Sanjay Shah. Original co-creator for Everybody Hates Chris Ali LeRoi returns as
executive producer alongside Chris.
So, what we’ve learned today is everyone does not hate Chris. Well, we really don’t! Judging by his 4-decade long career, everyone actually LOVES Chris!
Everybody Still Hates Chris is currently airing on Comedy Central Wednesday nights at 10 PM EST, check out the first episode below.
