Onyx is a hip hop group that was formed in 1988 and was originally made up of schoolmates
Fredro Starr, Sonny Seeza, and Big DS. In 1991 Sticky Fingaz joined the group. We caught up with Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz recently and had the chance to have an authentic conversation with the
two legends.
Onyx hit song “Slam” reached platinum status when it was released two decades ago. We wanted to know how the group felt about the track still being as popular as it is today and how it makes them feel to see the younger generation vibin to the song. Fredro Starr responded “It’s just the energy in the game and sometimes it still shocks me that the back the f@#! up influence still shows its face in
the music industry thirty years later”.
Sticky Fingaz also chimed in “There ain’t no divisions for me. I feel blessed to be able to connect with all age groups and to be able to pull creative energy from those before me, while we do our part to impact those that have come after us”.
Over the last 20 years, Onyx has been touring the world and developed a huge fanbase in Russia. They emphasized that hip hop is everywhere and no matter where you go, you can find it represented in one way or another. Onyx mission is to bring real hip hop back. They feel it has been missing since Master P entered the game in 1991. They intend to play their part in doing so with their newest track Boom Boom Bap. It is definitely safe to say “Onyx is heavyweight and still undisputed”.
