Afro Preachah, it’s a unique name for an unique recording artist. Born into a household where gospel music was only played by his parents, Afro Preachah found ways to sneak a listen to funk and hip hop. Though he enjoyed listening to gospel greats like The Clarke Sisters, Dallas Mass Choir, and The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, he had an instant attraction to Parliament, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Morris Day, and his all-time favorite MC Lyte.
Afro Preachah got his name from a friend who is also his producer and the creative genius behind many of his hot beats. When asked about his process when writing songs, Afro Preachah stated, “Music is definitely it’s own language, but to me when I hear it, I’m hearing the words pouring out of the music. When I write lyrics, the reason I write them that way is because the track is singing it to me”.
Afro Preachah takes pride in performing. Each time he takes the stage he vows to deliver his music differently. He wants his fans to know every performance is unique and “if you miss it, you will hear about it.”
Afro Preachah has a loyal, dedicated fanbase, even expanding around the globe to China. Though his talent for martial arts previously led him to China, once they heard his music they were hooked. Afro Preachah’s songs “Watch Me” and “Rap Caviar” have done amazing online as well as on the radio dial. “Rap Caviar,” quickly hit over 200K plays on Spotify and the number continues to grow. His advise to other independent recording artist is to get a website and link it to ASCAP, BMI, and Songtrust. He stressed this is important to collect royalties when your music is played. He stated, “Your website is like a museum and your music is the art. Invest in your music.” He also encourages recording artist to focus on getting their music played in other countries as the international market is hungry for American music.
