On this day, August 3, 1998, R&B Divas, Brandy and Monica were number one on the Billboard chart with “The Boy Is Mine”. This was the first number one hit for both artist, selling over four million copies worldwide and reaching double platinum status. The inspiration behind the song came from Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney’s 1982 hit, “The Girl Is Mine”.
“The Boy Is Mine”, was at the top of the chart for 13 weeks. It was also nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards and won a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.
